The Strategy: Take a holistic approach by funding five sites, each of which must provide employment-related services, educational assistance, help with child support, parenting classes and anything else “that would help a noncustodial parent become involved in the lives of their children,” says Kenneth Braswell, director of the state’s Fatherhood Initiative, which is housed in the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.

Are black men standing in the gaps for their children? Fatherhood 101

Today 75% of young black children are born into single parent homes. That single parent happens to be mostly mothers. We want to examine how black men are living up to their duties as fathers. Even if they are not in the home, there is a huge role they must fill to raise their children. We will also discuss how young black men are being trained to be dads. Special Guest: Kenneth Braswell (Executive Dir.) Fathers, Inc. (www.fathersinc.org)

Kenneth Braswell, Director of the NYS Fatherhood Initiative declared, “In the New York State Fatherhood Initiative's continuing work of serving over 1600 non-custodial parents to date—mostly fathers—we work passionately in building the capacity of fathers to provide financially and emotionally for their children. The Daddy Daughter Dance provided us with a beautiful vision of our works' possibilities.”

Programs help men become better dads.

The goal: Making sure every day is father's day

"There is a pressure on us, for some reason, for us to emulate the negative images we see in the media as being a man," said Kenneth Braswell, head of Fathers Inc., based in New York City. "Some men don't see the man as the person who has a job, has an education, comes home and takes care of his family."

National corporations are seeing minority communities as an emerging consumer market and realizing they have to understand minority communities to make the most of their diverse work force. Albany, New York - On Thursday, June 12, 2003, over 350 community members and leaders were in attendance as the Capital District YMCA introduced its new Black and Latino Achievers Program.

The Black and Latino Achievers Program was founded in 1971 at the Harlem YMCA and spread quickly throughout YMCAs across the nation. The central purpose of the program is to help African American and Latino youth set and pursue higher education and career goals. The program reaches into the heart of the community by matching adult achievers with youth participants—bringing a positive influence to our many surrounding communities.
